Trail
Riverbend Ponds Natural Area
Seven old gravel-pit ponds and a stretch of the Poudre on East Prospect Road: three miles of natural-surface trail and a boardwalk, bass, crappie and catfish fishing, and more than 200 bird species including white pelicans. Free; open 5 am to 11 pm.
The natural area for birds: seven former gravel-mine ponds, wetlands and a reach of the Poudre, where over 200 species feed, rest, nest or pass through, among them green herons, American white pelicans, double-crested cormorants and a long list of ducks. About three miles of natural-surface trail, plus a boardwalk from the Cherly Street entrance and a paved underpass to the neighboring natural areas. The ponds are stocked with largemouth bass, crappie and channel catfish; non-motorized boats, horses and bikes are allowed, dogs on leash, and off-trail walking is permitted here. Open daily 5 am to 11 pm.
