The state park beyond the reservoir, reached through Bellvue: 2,574 acres of rolling valleys and mountainous hillsides with 28.1 miles of trail that the park says generally climb at no more than a 12 percent grade, shared by hikers, horses and mountain bikes. Five picnic areas, six campsites, and a visitor center at the north end. Grassland birds such as lark bunting, horned lark and western meadowlark on the lower ground, and raptors, waterfowl and shorebirds drawn to the reservoir’s open water.

Open daily from 5 am to sunset; the office keeps 8:30 to 4 as staffing allows. A daily vehicle pass is $10 to $12 for Colorado plates and $15 to $17 for out-of-state plates, or $80 for an annual pass. Dogs on leash.
